Telangana Rastra Samiti sweeps Zilla Parishad chairman polls

TRS won in Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Warangal, Medak, and Mahbubnagar

Hyderabad: Ruling Telangana Rastra Samiti swept the Telangana Zilla Parishad chairpersons’ posts by winning six of the seven Zilla Parishads for which polls were held on Saturday. The TRS won in Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Warangal, Medak, and Mahbubnagar while the Congress bagged Nalgonda ZP. There were four women among the winners.

Election to the Ranga Reddy Zilla Parishad was postponed due to lack of quorum and amidst controversy about an alliance between the Congress and the Telugu Desam. Polls to Khammam Zilla Parishad were stayed by the High Court following the merger of seven mandals with Andhra Pradesh.

Suspense ruled till the end in the Warangal ZP polls where the Congress, despite having a majority, lost to the TRS due to cross voting by the Congress and the TD members. Similar trend was seen in Ranga Reddy district where elections could not be held due to lack of quorum and was postponed to Sunday.

Of the 33 ZPTC seats in Ranga Reddy ZP, the Congress has 14 ZPTCs, the TRS 12 and the Telugu Desam 7. Following the defection of Mr Yadav Reddy, the Congress and the TRS have equal strength of 13 ZPTCs.

The Congress and the Telugu Desam ZPTCs, on instructions from their respective state leaders, reportedly began negotiations on seat-sharing for five years and did not attend the meeting, which led to postponement of elections.

The newly elected chairpersons of Zilla Parishads in the state were Ms G. Padma Warangal (TRS), D. Raju, Nizamabad (TRS), Ms Sobha Rani, Adilabad (TRS), Ms Rajamani, Medak (TRS), Ms Tulla Uma, Karimnagar (TRS), Bandari Bhaskar, Mahbubnagar (TRS) and Balu Naik, Nalgonda (Congress).
