New York: Just four years ago, it was hailed as the Goldilocks planet, a planet in the golden zone that can sustain life.
Gliese 581g was the first planet scientists found within the habitable zone, the region around a star where it’s not too hot and not too cold for liquid water to endure on a planet’s surface.
After the initial excitement, some scientists started to seriously doubt whether Gliese 581g was really there, because the signal was weak. Now, research says that Gliese 581g doesn’t actually exist.
Its existence was the result of a ‘mirage’, caused when gravity distorts the light from stellar systems that reach the earth.
