CM seeks expertise of the Singapore government in developing a finance city in Chennai

Chennai: Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has sought the experience and expertise of the Singapore government in developing a finance city in Chennai which would complement other regional financial centres and provide necessary back up. She discussed the issue with Singapore minister of foreign affairs and law K. Shangumam when he called on CM at the secretariat here on Friday.

During the discussion, Shanmugam had mentioned that while Tamil Nadu was one of the top three destinations of Singapore’s investment in India and agreed that economic ties between the two countries need to be deepened further. “With Tamil Nadu’s strong manufacturing base and Singapore’s strength as a financial centre with a large pool of funds looking for an outlet, there is a lot of potential for deepening of ties .

J. Jayalalithaa also sought the help of Singapore’s expertise in desalination plants to set up more such plants in the state. She had also requested K. Shanmugam to designate senior officials who could interact with senior officials from the Government of Tamil Nadu to take forward the relationship.

The Chief Minister pointed out to the visiting minister that despite cultural ties and frequent people to people interactions, the economic relationship between them was yet to achieve its full potential and further looked forward to more investment and expertise from Singapore to realise Tamil Nadu’s goals under the ‘Tamil Nadu Vision 2023’ Document, an official release said.
