KPCC not keen on holding polls at organisational level

This is for the first time that organisational elections are being held since 1998

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Although the AICC has announced holding of organisational elections, the majority of the leaders in the state are not keen on them. A few days back, AICC working committee member A. K. Antony too had opined that organisational elections would pave the way for more groupism in the party.

This is for the first time that organisational elections are being held since 1998. They will be conducted in five phases from December to July next year. A senior KPCC general secretary told DC that the AICC was not sure of the objective of the elections now as they should have happened years ago.

“The morale of the Congress leaders is at its lowest ebb. The Congress got a breather in the Lok Sabha elections due to the negative impact created by the CPM among the public,” he told DC.

The majority of the Congress leaders in the state are apprehensive of the organisational elections when the panchayat elections are due in July next year. However, leaders at the grassroots level are keen on elections as a number of block-level leaders have been sweating it out for the party for over 20 years.

Sources close to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told DC that he was keen to bring in changes at the organisational level right from the KPCC president post to the booth level for a massive structural change against Mr Antony’s wish.

AICC general secretary Janardhan Dwivedi has already sent letters to the respective PCC chiefs across the country about the dates and asking them to complete the membership drive by the end of this year itself.
