Eastern side of Ernakulam railway station to don new look

Interlocking tiles at entrance, parking lot
Kochi: Commuters will no longer have to suffer bumpy rides to the eastern entrance of the Ernakulam South railway station as the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) has voluntarily laid inter-locking tiles at the entrance and parking lot of the station, fulfilling a long pending demand.
The move follows the recent visit of GCDA chairman N Venugopal to the GCDA complex located near the eastern entrance of the station. “I was shocked and upset to see the waterlogged entrance to the world class station. A major part of the eastern entrance and adjacent grounds belong to the GCDA and so we immediately decided to go in for the interlocking tiles which are a perfect solution for roads regularly damaged by heavy rains and waterlogging,” said Mr Venugopal.
The Rs 12 lakh project is almost complete and now vehicles can be taken to the station entrance without hassle. Happy with the change, commuters are hoping the railways will take a cue from the GCDA and relay the rest of the compound too.
“The parking lot at the southern side should also be re-laid with tiles. Earlier the eastern entrance was neglected but now the railways are taking special care to develop the area. It has even opened a reservation counter here,” said Mr Paul K J Manvettom, president of the All Kerala Railway Users Association.
