Drought looms over rain deficit

The state has recorded a deficit of 16 percent
Thiruvananthapuram: Fears of a drought loom large as all districts in the state except two have suffered a deficiency of southwest monsoon rainfall. The capital has recorded a deficit of 53 percent, followed by Kollam and Alappuzha with a deficit of 31 and 30 percent respectively. Wayanad and Malappuram are the only districts that have received normal rainfall in the first 25 days this June. Overall, the state has recorded a deficit of 16 percent.
The silver lining is the sudden surge in rains in Idukki in the last week. The district, which had deficient rainfall in general for the entire month and within which falls the 780-MW Idukki hydel project and, has recorded a 55 percent excess rainfall during the last week. Even then, Idukki district has a rainfall deficiency of 16 percent.
