Nagaland Governor resigns, others may follow

All the three governors who have resigned so far are either former IPS or IAS officers

New Delhi: Nagaland governor Ashwani Kumar resigned on Wednesday, becoming the third appointee of the UPA government to a gubernatorial post who has put in his papers with the change in government at the Centre.

The BJP government has been prodding UPA appointees, including state governors and chairmen of various commissions and bodies, to resign.

Next in line are the governors of West Bengal and Goa, M.K. Narayanan and B.V. Wanchoo, whom the BJP has been targeting.

“I resigned this morning and came to Shimla. I am relaxed now,” Mr Kumar said. His resignation has come after Uttar Pradesh governor B.L. Joshi and Chhattisgarh governor Shekhar Dutt put in their papers last week.

Mr Kumar, a former IPS officer who had served as CBI director, was appointed Nagaland governor in March 2013.

Mr Kumar was CBI director when the agency had arrested BJP general secretary Amit Shah in connection with the Sohrabuddin Sheikh alleged fake encounter.

All the three governors who have resigned so far are either former IPS or IAS officers.
