Fitness fundas of the biggest K’town stars

We find out what the leading stars of Kollywood do to stay in shape
Chennai: They command the adoration of cinegoers. Youngsters imitate them when it comes to sporting a trendy look or a beefed-up avatar. Everyone wants to know what their fitness secret is or just any exercise tip they have to offer that may help them get that perfect bod too. It remains a matter of much speculation and curiosity — how do the stars keep fit?
Superstar Rajinikanth, who still rules the roost in Kollywood, is said to be averse to hitting the gym and prefers walking and practising yoga instead. The star who has plenty of energy on screen makes it a point to keep himself healthy and believes in adopting a holistic approach to achieve this. He doesn’t mind ‘walking those extra miles’ during his leisure time and is disciplined in terms of what he consumes. The star apparently sticks to vegetarian dishes.
Similarly, Kamal Haasan who has enthralled movie buffs with the ways in which he moulds his persona to suit the myriad characters he plays, watches his diet carefully. The actor who embraced a fitness regime a long time ago eats plenty of vegetables but likes to get his protein by eating chicken and fish, says his trainer (name withheld on request).
He adds, “Kamal does not drink nor does he have milk products. He likes to sip on black tea. Also, the actor doesn’t use protein powder to build his body, but does yoga and other warm-up exercises morning and evening, no matter how hectic his schedule is! Down the years, he has also mastered the art of toning the body which helped him pull off the roles in movies, like Hey Ram and Aalavandhan, which had him sporting a lean and chiseled look.”
Fans have been in awe for some time now of Ajith’s graceful ageing and ‘salt n pepper’ appearance, both on screen and off it. His pictures of working out in the gym for his role in Arrambam had gone viral at one point in time. The actor has always made sure that he looks trim and fit, thanks to the relentless expectations of his admirers. A source informs us that the actor isn’t keen on vigorous training and is only bothered about leading a healthy life. The source says, “He used to cycle sometime ago. But he has now bid adieu to it owing to his knee injury. Ajith was getting trained under trainer Siva for some time.”
A little birdie tells us that Vijay, who flexed his muscles in Thuppakki to the delight of his fans, isn’t particular though, about sporting a beefed-up body, and hence, does simple exercises.
Alkhas Joseph, who trained Vikram for his upcoming film, Ai, says that the actor loves cycling in public places, wearing a mask. He shed almost 20 kg for the movie as per the requirements of the character by doing body weight exercises, free waves, squats, functional movements and so on.
He says, “I don’t advocate protein powders, steroids or other ‘short cut’ approaches for actors to get that quintessential hunky look. I make them do different sets of exercises for two or three hours depending on the actor’s agility. The best part of training actors is that their demands are time bound — hence, it’s both challenging and fun training them.”
Alkhas was also behind the stylish six-pack that Suriya acquired for Vaaranam Ayiram, which became quite the rage among youngsters.
Needless to say, Suriya, who commands a good fan following across the South, is a die-hard fitness freak who has managed to maintain consistency in his appearance all these years.
In an interview to DC, the actor had said, “I believe that an actor should be aware of the quantity of protein and nutrition he requires to stay healthy and fit. For me, fitness is a complete package and all we need is a balanced diet. For example, a person who weighs 70 kg must take at least 70 gm of protein. I exercise on a regular basis and take a high protein diet. I endorse the saying, ‘Eat like a nutritionist, run like an athlete and sleep like a baby’.” Indeed, a great fitness mantra!
