Jayalalithaa steps in to slam Centre

Tamil Nadu CM against Hindi on social media
Chennai: Slamming the Modi’ government’s insistence on use of Hindi in official accounts of the centre in social media networks as ‘against the letter and spirit’ of the Official Languages Act, 1963, Jayalalithaa said on Friday that this highly sensitive issue caused disquiet to the people of Tamil Nadu, who are very proud and passionate about their linguistic heritage.
In her letter to PM Narendra Modi, Jayalalithaa said that she had come to know that the Ministry of Home Affairs had issued two office memoranda, one by the Official Language Department dated March 10, 2014 and another by the co-ordination division of the Ministry of Home Affairs dated May 27, 2014 about the insistence on use of Hindi.
“These memoranda direct the official accounts on social media like Facebook, Twitter, blogs, Google and You Tube which at present only use English should compulsorily use Hindi, or both Hindi and English with Hindi being written above or first. This makes the use of Hindi Mandatory and English Optional,” Jaya said. n P2
