Heat wave for 2 more days in Telangana

Peak temperature in Hyderabad this year crossed 43 degrees Celsius

Hyderabad: The Southwest monsoon officially set in over the country on Friday, but the heat wave is likely to continue in Telangana and coastal Andhra for two more days.

The Indian Meteorological Department issued another heat wave warning on Saturday for parts of Telangana and coastal Andhra stating the conditions would prevail until Monday.

The heat wave has been sweeping through the two states for the last few days though, interestingly, rainfall during the past week had been excess in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts and it has been near normal in most districts.

The humidity is adding to the difficult weather. Scientists, however, said the heat wave is not totally abnormal.

The warning issued by the Indian Meteorological Department says, “Heat wave conditions would prevail over some parts in the districts of Guntur, Krishna, Prakasam and Nellore of Coastal Andhra Pradesh and in the districts of Adilabad, Nizam-abad, Karimnagar and Warangal of Telangana.”

It further said the weather would remain unchanged in these districts until Monday.

The Indian Meteorolog-ical Department annou-nced that the monsoon has set in over Kerala on Friday though it was predicted to set in on June 1. The delay of a week is expected to continue and the monsoon is expected to set in by June 10 or 12 in the state.

Scientists say that the extreme swing in temperature is normal. Y.K. Reddy, director-in-charge, IMD Hyderabad, explained, “In peak summer, heat waves are very common. It may last for two to three days. Every summer, some days are bound to be very hot and humid.”

The peak temperature in Hyderabad this year crossed 43 degrees Celsius. “So far it has only touched 43 degrees Celsius, but in Hyderabad, 45.5 has also been breached in the past. So it's not the worst heat wave,” Dr Reddy said.
