Today the old state of Andhra Pradesh, will be reborn

The 11 districts which were part of the composite state of Madras (comprising Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam speaking areas), fought for a separate state under the banner of ‘Andhra’, purely on linguistic basis that Telugu speaking areas should form a separate state to meet the aspirations of millions of people

Following the death of Potti Sriramulu on December 15, 1952, on the 58th day of his fast, commotion and agitation broke out across the 11 districts. Jawaharlal Nehru was compelled to declare the formation of the Andhra State in Parliament on 19, December, 1952.

1 Oct, 1953: Andhra State comes into being with its capital in Kurnool.

It comprised Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Nellore, Chittoor, Kadapa, Anantapur and Kurnool and three Telugu speaking Taluks, Aluru, Adoni, and Rayadurg of Bellary district of erstwhile Mysore state.

However, there was a demand from both Andhra and the then Hyderabad State that all Telugu speaking areas of both the states should be merged into one, making it Andhra Pradesh or Visalandhra.

1 Nov, 1956: Andhra Pradesh comes existence.

In 1972 when the Supreme Court upheld the validity of Mulki Rules, there was commotion that finally culminated in a mass agitation demanding ‘Jai Andhra’ state.

The agitation took a violent turn following the sudden demise of Kakani Venkata Ratnam on 25, December 1972

Prime Minister Indira Gandhi intervened and brought six point formulae bringing the Zone wise recruitment in public employment and education, and also abolished the Mulki rules by a special legislation.
