Man jumps into Adyar river, drowns

He was depressed after separating from wife

CHENNAI: A 29-year-old man, suspected to be suffering from depression, committed suicide by jumping into the Adyar river from the Kotturpuram bridge on Tuesday evening. The man, M. Vinoth Kumar of Purasawalkam, had parked his two-wheeler near the bridge and jumped into the river, even as a policewoman tried to stop him. Police investigations revealed that the man had been separated from his wife Pushpalatha, a computer operator at Anna University, and their three children. He and did not have a stable job to support himself.

Frequent quarrels between the couple over trivial issues forced them to live separately after the woman preferred a harassment complaint with the local all women’s police station. The police arrested Vinoth a few months back. He had recently come out of prison, after which he took the extreme step, said an official. Fire personnel fished out the body and sent it to govt Royapettah hospital for autopsy.
