Rachel attempted to murder Delsy while she was asleep in her room

Kochi: A 24-year-old girl, is fighting for her life in a private hospital near North Paravur after being set ablaze allegedly by a 21-year-old girl, who is also a postulant at the nunnery where the victim was staying. Both were inmates of St Ann’s convent at North Paravur.

The victim was identified as Delsy, daughter of Varghese of Kadavunkal House at Malikappuram near Chellanam in Ernakulam and the accused was identified as Rachel, daughter of Jossy of Valiyaveettila House at Arthunkal near Cherthala in Alappuzha district.

According to police, Rachel attempted to murder Delsy while she was asleep in her room. A previous enmity is believed to be the reason for the murder attempt. Delsy suffered 40 per cent burns.

“Rachel and Jismi had been too close earlier. But when Delsy joined them, Rachel felt that Jismi was getting closer to Delsy. Rachel and Delsy were also set to be transferred to a convent in Andhra Pradesh within the next two days. Rachel tried to murder Delsy in order to stop them from being transferred together,” the North Paravur sub inspector said.
