Delhi court accepts bail bond of Arvind Kejriwal, orders release

AAP supremo walked out of Tihar jail on Tuesday night

New Delhi: Ending six days of drama, Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal walked out of Tihar jail on Tuesday night after he agreed to furnish a bail bond in a criminal defamation case filed by BJP MP Nitin Gadkari, who is now a Union minister.

Mr Kejriwal had refused to furnish the bond of Rs 10,000 as directed by a local court on May 21. He was remanded to custody and had appealed the order in the High Court.

However, the AAP leader backtracked and agreed to furnish the bond following a suggestion by the Delhi High Court to him to do so.

The drama came to an end after day long activities during which Mr Kejriwal's counsel visited him in Tihar Jail and conveyed to him the suggestion of a Delhi High Court bench of Justices Kailash Gambhir and Sunita Gupta.

Following intense negotiations, Mr Kejriwal’s counsel informed the local counsel at 5.15 pm that the AAP leader has signed the personal bond and was ready to file it. The court ordered his release “forthwith”.

Mr Kejriwal left from Gate No. 1 of Tihar Jail.

Meanwhile, a Delhi court on Tuesday issued notices to Aam Aadmi Party leaders Manish Sisodia and Gopal Rai on a contempt plea seeking action against them for their statements regarding the court order sending Arvind Kejriwal to judicial custody.

Metropolitan magistrate Gomati Manocha sought response from Mr Sisodia and Mr Rai on the plea filed by advocate Pankaj Mendiratta, who alleged that they had made “contemptuous statements” suggesting that the court process in the defamation case against Mr Kejriwal was “not judicious and in accordance with law.”
