Mary Anning is known for her finds in Jurassic marine fossil beds

Mumbai: British fossil collector Mary Anning's 215th birthday was celebrated by search engine giant Google with a special doodle on Wednesday.

The Google homepage shows Mary Anning cleaning up the remains of a dinosaur while the fossils of other animals make up the word 'Google'.

Born on May 21st 1799, to a cabin maker in Lyme Regis, Dorset, England, Anning has been named one of the ten most influential women in the history of science.

She started out as a fossil collector, and used to dig the fossils and sell them for a living. It wasn't until later in her life, that she took it up as a science. Anning is best known for her fossil collection from the Jurassic period near her home in Lyme Regis Dorset.

Though her work help influence and shape up the study of palaeontology, Mary Anning's gender prevented her from being a member the Geological Society of London or getting full credit for her breakthrough work.

Anning passed away on March 9, 1847 after a battle with breast cancer. She was 47 years old.
