"Aanand Rai is just a director and 'Tanu Weds Manu' is our property. Hence he cannot continue with the film without our permission. I am sending him a notice today," Vinod, who is a co-producer of the movie, told PTI.

"We have the rights, we have copyright over the film. How can he (Rai) make the film without talking to us. He had tried to negotiate with other partners on making the sequel but things did not work out," Vinod said.

"I am not against the sequel. We would be happy to make it but it should happen through proper process," he said.

Rai remained unavailable for comment.

Rai had announced that the sequel will have Ranaut in a double role.

Actors R Madhavan, Kangna Ranaut and Jimmy Shergill had played lead roles in the original hit version of 2011.
