CWC expresses full faith in Gandhis; party revamp top priority

Manmohan Singh took responsibility for defeat

New Delhi: The first meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) after the Lok Sabha elections called here on Monday went on expected lines.

Party president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul offered their resignations which was promptly rejected outright by the highest decision making body. It has also authorised her to revamp the organisation at all levels.

Mrs Gandhi said “I believe I have not been able to bring about the necessary changes to strengthen the party. Therefore, I take full responsibility for this defeat and I am prepared to relinquish my position.”

Making his resignation offer, Rahul Gandhi said he feels that the party lacks in accountability and he begins this by offering to relinquish the post as felt he could not fulfill the expectations party leaders.

Rejecting the resignation offers of Mrs Gandhi and Rahul as “no solution,” Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said he, being the head of the government, also takes responsibility for whatever shortcomings existed at the government level.

The meeting held at the AICC headquarters lasted over two and a half hour. It was presided by Sonia Gandhi and atte-nded by Dr Manmohan Singh and 38 members including permanent and special invitees.

According to sources no body questioned the authority of Mrs Gandhi, Rahul and his team, despite the crushing defeat. In fact both of them emerged stronger after the CWC meeting which has appreciated their ‘untiring’ efforts on for the Congress and its candidates, in the polls.

The CWC members nominated by Mrs Gandhi , have realised that the grand old party cannot survive without the Gandhi-Nehru family.

“Accountability has been talked about. Wait for the reorganisation,” said party leader Janardhan Dwivedi.
