Hyderabad: The 2014 election results have left people confused about whether to believe in exit polls or not in future. While the exit polls by agencies and media organisations were more or less correct in the case of Telangana Assembly polls with the TRS crossing the majority mark of 58 seats comfortably, they were proved wrong in Seemandhra.
For example, most agencies and media organisations had predicted a neck and neck fight between the TD-BJP and the YSRCP-CPM combine in Andhra Pradesh. But in reality, the TD-BJP combine not only crossed the majority figure of 88 seats but got over 100 seats, making it possible for it to form the government without BJP support.
It Telangana too, predictions of a hung House was proven false, and the TRS will not need any party's support to form the government.
The MIM and the TD-BJP were being tipped to become “king-makers,” but the people gave clear mandates in both Telangana and Seemandhra. However, the exit polls by former MP Lagadapati Rajagopal were almost correct as the TD-BJP emerged clear winners in AP as predicted in his survey that had also stated that the TD-BJP would win nearly 20 seats in Telangana.
For LS seats too, while the exit polls by other agencies were off the mark in Seemandhra and Telangana, Mr Rajagopal’s survey came close to actual figures.
At the national level, most surveys had predicted the NDA would cross the magic figure of 272 but very few predicted that it would get an overwhelming majority.
