IIT-Madras slips four ranks on QS survey

Several centres of technical excellence have lost places in Asia-300

Chennai: Several IITs have slipped in QS university rankings: Asia this year. According to Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), ranking of top 300 institutions in Asia, IIT-Delhi has been at 38 for the last two years, whereas IIT-Madras now stands at 53, slipping from the 49th place that it was in last year.

IIT-Bombay slipped to 41 from 39. IIT Kanpur moved down one rank to 52. IIT-Kharagpur dropped two ranks to be placed at 60, while IIT-Roorkee has moved from 66 to 70. IIT-Guwahati slipped from 89 to 95.

The University of Calcutta has moved up from 143 to 131 and the University of Mumbai has moved from 140 to 131. However, the University of Delhi moved down from 80 to 81.

“IITs have a great reputation among graduate employers, and now produce a relatively high volume of research, but it is not yet having a significant impact in terms of citations,” says QS head of research Ben Sowter.

In the latest Asian ranking, Banaras Hindu University, Punjab, Manipal and Amity universities, Birla Institute of Technology and Science, and the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) have been included for the first time.

“The quality of Indian universities – particularly the top 20 per cent is underestimated by international rankings for very many reasons,” Mohandas Pai, Chairman, Indian Centre for Assessment & Accreditation (ICAA) said.

“Indian universities do not seem to consider international rankings important. Many do not even attempt to consolidate and share up-to-date information about their performance or functioning. The availability of information is therefore a challenge for a ranking organisation,” he said.

The ICAA, in association with QS unveiled the rankings today at New Delhi. The first copy was handed over to President Pranab Mukherjee.
