Andhra Pradesh winner to bag Rajya Sabha seat bonanza

Hyderabad: The party that wins the Assembly elections in Seemandhra will get a Rajya Sabha seat as a bonus as the death of Nedurumalli Janardhan Reddy has left an RS seat vacant.

Nedurumalli Janardhan Reddy was re-elected to Rajya Sabha in June 2010 and the term will expire on June 21, 2016.

The Election Commission has to thus conduct a by-election for this seat as there are two years’ tenure left. Nedurumalli’s MP seat had been allotted to Seemandhra in the state’s bifurcation. After the completion of the ongoing Lok Sabha and Assembly elections and after the new governments take charge in the Centre and the new states, the Election Commission will conduct the byelections, most probably in June.

The Rajya Sabha seat will go to the party that gets the most MLA seats in the Assembly. With both the YSR Congress and Telugu Desam are confident of coming to power in Seemandhra with more than 120 Assembly seats, it is anybody’s guess who will get the seat.

Once the poll results are announced, leaders of the winning party will start lobbying for the seat.
