Australia eyes 300,000 visitors from India by 2020

Arrivals from India is expected to grow annually by 7.2 per cent

Mumbai: Australia is estimating up to 300,000 visitors from India and expects up to Australian dollar 2.3 billion spending by 2020. "India offers huge potential for future in terms of visitor arrivals and spends. Arrivals from India is expected to grow annually by 7.2 per cent till 2020-21. The 'India 2020 Strategic Plan' identifies the main opportunities and sets out the approach required to build Australia's appeal and to win market share.

"The plan predicts arrivals up to 300,000 visitors and spending up to Australian dollar 2.3 billion by 2020," said Nishant Kashikar, Tourism Australia Country Manager, India and Gulf. To tap the opportunity in India, Tourism Australia has doubled the marketing spend in the country since the first year of the 2020 plan. Arrivals from India to Australia is estimated to be 179,000 for the year 2013-14.

"We have witnessed an increased demand for destinationS like Hamilton Island, Kangaroo Island, Tasmania that are renowned for offering uniquely Aussie experiences," he said.

"Our primary target markets are Mumbai, Delhi while the secondary markets include Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Kolkata. Our target audience to Australia includes affluent, mid-life travellers between 35-54 years of age. They are usually first time travellers to Australia and increasingly travel as free independent travellers," he said.
