Sony seeks big push in India, plans 30 models

Sony targets sales of Rs 5,500 crore in smartphone category in 2014-15

New Delhi: For Sony, smartphone mobile business could be the major revenue driver in India. Sony India managing director Kenichiro Hibi said on Thursday that the Japanese company is expecting revenue from smartphone business to grow by 83 per cent in 2014-15. The company is giving a big push to the smart phone business in India, launching 30 new smart phones this year. “We will continue to make an aggressive pitch in the smartphone category in India, and are targeting sales of Rs 5,500 crore in 2014-15. In the previous fiscal the revenue was Rs 3,000 crore from smartphone,” said Mr Hibi.

The company has achieved a marketshare of 10 per cent in the smartphone business and is now targeting to reach 15 per cent. Overall, the company is expecting to clock a revenue of Rs 12,000 crore in India during this fiscal. Sony India, had registered revenue of Rs 8,000 crore in FY’14 and will invest about Rs 350 crore for marketing of its mobile phones from its total budget of Rs 800 crore for the year.

“Last year, we saw growth of 30 per cent in smartphones and 35 per cent in TVs. This year, mobile business is expected to be bigger than television. Even though we have sold off Vaio, this year we are expecting Rs 12,000 crore in revenue,” Mr Hibi added. Sony India on Thurs-day launched its premium smartphone, the Xperia Z2 in India, at '49,990. The phone will be available from May 12 onwards at all key retail outlets across India.
