Shift appointed day for creation of Telangana state to May 16, demands KCR

TRS is worried that a gap after the polls could used for horse-trading

Hyderabad: The TRS will urge the Centre to bring forward the Appointed Date for creation of the new state of Telangana.Though the Centre has fixed June 2 as the Appointed Date, the TRS wants it to be May 16, the day the Assembly and Lok Sabha election results are out.

“Election results will be out on May 16 and the new government should be formed immediately thereafter, like all other states. Centre has fixed June 2 as the Appointed Date for Telangana. Telangana will be without a duly elected government for over a fortnight, which is not right. We will request the Centre to bring it forward,” G. Jagadishwar Reddy, TRS politburo member and Suryapet Assembly candidate said.

Mr Reddy, who has moved the High Court in this regard, said that it was a fit case to be taken up with the Centre.

“We will write to the Centre in this regard. The Assembly has been dissolved and President’s rule is in place. It will be in public interest. A civil government should take over immediately after the election results on May 16,” he added.

Some TRS leaders are also worried that a gap after the poll results could be dangerous and could be used for horse-trading if the TRS fell short of a clear majority.

“Though we are confident of a clear majority and of forming the first government of Telangana, God forbid if we miss the magic figure (60 out of 119 Assembly seats), the Congress may indulge in horse-trading. It’s a known fact that national parties target regional parties in such a scenario,” TRS leader P.L. Srinivas said.

However, senior Congress leader T. Devender Reddy dismissed such fears saying that people would not tolerate such horse-trading and there would be severe backlash if someone even attempted it.

“We can’t rule out such a situation in a hung Assembly. But having achieved Telangana after a long struggle, any such attempts will lead to severe backlash from people. I don’t think any party will dare to indulge in such acts. They may try for alliances, but not break a party,” he added.

A senior TRS leader, however, said that chances of bringing forward the Appointed Date fixed by the President of India was quite remote. “I don’t think its possible now,” he remarked.
