Chennai train Blast: No proof that Andhra Pradesh was blast target says police

Hyderabad: State police chief B. Prasada Rao on Tuesday said the probe into the twin blasts onboard the Kaziranga Express in Chennai remained inconclusive on the angle that the real target was poll-bound Andhra Pradesh.

Reacting to reports which claimed the state was the real target of the May 1 attacks, Mr Rao said that “the investigation is not conclusive regarding these aspects”.

“Already, the Tamil Nadu DGP made a statement to that effect with a rider that the investigation is at its preliminary stage. They (the TN police) have to determine whether the explosive was planted in Bengaluru or in Chennai. Once they come to a conclusion (on the location), other things will come out. The probe is not conclusive about these aspects,” Mr Rao told mediapersons.

The blasts on May 1 aboard the Kaziranga Express, at Chennai’s Central Railway Station, injured 14 and claimed the life of 24-year-old AP-born software professional, Swati. She was originally from Guntur.

Earlier, Tamil Nadu DGP K. Ramanujam had gone on record to say that “Chennai was not the target.”

“Some other location was the intended target also the train was running late,” Mr Ramanujam had said.

In response to another query, the DGP had added that AP police was also seeking the custody of suspected ISI agent and Sri Lankan national Mohammed Zahir Hussain, who has been arrested by the Tamil Nadu police in connection with the blasts.
