Premalatha gets advance bail in poll speech issue

A case had been registered against her at Gopichettipalayam police for her poll related speech

Chennai: The Madras high court granted anticipatory bail to Premalatha, wife of DMDK leader Vijayakant, who apprehended arrest in connection with a case registered against her by the Gopichettipalayam police for her poll related speech on April 14 alleging irregularities in the distribution of drought relief fund in Erode district.

The matter relates to the complaint given by AIADMK party town secretary Syed Pudansa, alleging that her speech on April 14 was provocative and intended to affect public tranquility and amounts to public mischief.

Justice P Devadass granted anticipatory bail to Premalatha on the condition that she should execute a bond for Rs 10,000 with two sureties each for a like sum and should appear before the Gopichettipalayam police as and when required.

While canvassing for her party candidates, Premalaltha spoke about the state minister from the district and said that the drought relief fund was not properly distributed to the really affected persons in Erode district and the relatives of the minister and ruling partymen, who had no lands, were the ones who benefited under the scheme.

Premalatha’s counsel Vijay Baskar contended that she spoke in good faith for protection of interest of the public and she has not committed any act or offence as alleged by the police.
