IPS officer R.V. Varun Kumar surrenders, remanded to custody

Dowry and woman harassment case was registered against him

Chennai: R. V. Varun Kumar, Tamil Nadu probationary IPS officer serving as assistant superintendent of police in Virudhanagar district and All India third rank holder in the 2010 UPSC examinations, surrendered in a Saidapet city court Monday and was remanded to judicial custody in connection with dowry and woman harassment case registered against him.

Varun Kumar reached the 11th metropolitan magistrate court in Saidapet and surrendered. His counsel claimed that he was deployed on election duty in Vellore till recently.

“Delayed, but certainly not denied,” said Priydarshini, friend-turned-foe of Varun Kumar, as she talked about her struggle while she fought against the IPS officer. Talking to this newspaper on the surrender episode of Varun Kumar, she said she has no complaints against the investigators except the delay.

Priyadarshini, daughter of a police officer herself, had been fighting her battle for more than two years with the support of her parents. Finally, the long arm of law is catching up, she feels. She was certainly fighting against a strong IPS lobby which had given a long rope for Varun Kumar.

However, the city police, which probed the case, had been putting pressure on Varun Kumar and had told the court that he was not cooperating with the investigation. The city police had also sent a detailed report to the police headquarters strongly indicating that there are evidences of dowry harassment against him. It looks like the home department will have to take a call soon on the next course of action against the officer kept in judicial custody in a woman harassment case
