Cop lynched in Assam; Landmine kills 8

Dumka/ Srinagar: A total of 10 people were killed and 18 others were injured in various cases of violence during the sixth phase of Lok Sabha elections on Thursday.

Six polling officials and two policemen were killed and seven others injured when suspected Maoists blew up their vehicle in Dumka district of Jharkhand, DGP Rajeev Kumar said.

The landmine was triggered when they were returning from poll duty.

In Kokrajhar of Assam, a policeman was lynched to death and two others critically injured after an altercation broke out over the mock polling that locals wanted to hold after polling started on Thursday.

Though, presiding officer tried to clarify that mock polling was conducted in presence of election agents, some youths insisted on mock polling, forcing the police team to intervene.

After the police intervened, the mob attacked the cops killing a police constable.

In Anantnag constituency of Jammu and Kashmir, a polling official was killed and five others, including three security personnel, were injured in a sneak attack by suspected militants at Nagabal, a remote area of Shopian district.

The slain official was identified as Zia-ul-Haq, a returning officer who worked with state’s education department.

Official said that polling staff was targeted by gunmen as they were returning to the district headquarters from a polling station.

In Rajasthan, four photojournalists and a driver were injured and their vehicle was damaged in an attack by villagers, while they were going to cover a clash which broke out when a group of 150 people forcibly tried to enter a polling booth in Satha village in Dausa district.

ITBP force opened 14 rounds of fire in the air to disperse the mob of 150 people who were trying to enter into a polling booth in Satha, DGP (Law and Order) Navdeep Singh said.

The villagers pelted stones at the ITBP personnel when they asked them to vacate the booth area, he said adding, they also set on fire an ITBP vehicle.

Whereas in Mumbai, a police constable was injured during a clash between Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and Shiv Sena workers after both parties alleged that cash was being distributed to voters in suburban Trombay, police said.

At least 18 Shiv Sena workers including Kamini, wife of Rahul Shewale contesting from South Central LS constituency were booked under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), among others of the Indian Penal Code at Trombay police station.
