Despite age, Karunanidhi spares no efforts

Political leaders travel length and breadth of state for canvassing

Chennai: DMK president M. Karunanidhi is leaving no stone unturned for the April 24 poll.

The 90 year old undertook a day-long road show throughout Chennai, covering all three constituencies, on the last day of campaign, which he wrapped up with a mega rally at his favorite Chepauk.

Karunanidhi did not mind admitting that he toured despite doctors advising him against traveling even on Sunday. If Karunanidhi braved ill-health, his son Stalin went a notch above his father by covering 8,109 kilometers in 39 days. In fact, it would be an understatement to credit Stalin for the party’s vigorous electioneering, which no doubt, was better than any other in the poll fray considering that he engaged a host of star campaigners like his father-party president Karunanidhi, party general secretary K. Anbazhagan, Rajya Sabha Kanimozhi and actor Khusbu among others.

Even Khusbhu and Kanimozhi have campaigned for 17 days, covering around 20 Lok Sabha seats each. Like Karunanidhi, DMK general secretary K. Anbazhagan covered good distance in his 20 and odd days campaign. DMDK leader Vijayakanth' s was no mean achievement. The actor-politician who is the fulcrum of the BJP led national democratic alliance covered nearly 6,000 kilometers in his whirlwind campaign.
Premalatha Vijayalalithaa was also loudly heard in many nook and crannies of the state.

However, chief minister Jayalalithaa who used a chopper to cover most constituencies made her presence felt through mega rallies which drew not less than 20,000 people each.

Leaders like PMK founder Dr Ramadoss and Vaiko were less visible in this Lok Sabha 2014 poll season. Likewise, BJP bigwigs like L. Ganesan, Pon and Radhakrishnan were holed up in the respective constituencies they contest in. Vaiko was a lone exception.

He managed to cover a few extra constituencies besides his Virudhu Nagar seat.
