New, but a seasoned artiste

Harini Rao says that leaving her job has helped her find a way back to her music
Hyderabad: City-based Hindustani classical singer Harini Rao started performing on stage just two years back. On Saturday, she performed at the Dynasties of Music concert, along with sitar player Jyoti Thakkar and tabla maestro Arvind Paranjpe.
Although, the concert didn’t feature a jugalbandi between the musicians, Harini says that the artistes spent considerable time getting to know each other, sharing their respective tastes in music, to give shape to the concert. “Since we live in different cities, it wasn’t possible for us to collaborate in terms of our music, but we have been discussing about our thoughts on music, to lend a sense of uniformity to the concert,” she says.
Harini, who has been training under Swati Phadke since 1997, pursued her Sangeet Visharad along with her academic pursuits. A chartered accountant by profession, she has worked in several management firms in the city, but continued learning music. “I also started a terracotta jewellery line, but soon realised it was difficult juggling that with my office timings,” she says. So Harini quit her job, focussed on her business and also started her academy, Rageshree School of Music. She presently has six students in her class, but she also teaches over Skype, for those interested, but are unable to make it to class.
“Quitting my job, has given me the scope of doing my riyaz everyday. I am getting better with time and look forward for more opportunities to perform,” says the singer, who belongs to the Kirana Gharana of Hindustani classical music.
