Elections 2014: Bangalore South turnout worries BJP leaders

Constituency is witnessing a key contest between Nilekani and Ananth Kumar

Bengaluru: Leaders of the state unit of BJP are worried about the low voter turnout in Bengaluru, but expressed satisfaction about poll percentage recorded in other parts of Karnataka.

“Though moderate polling was recorded in Bengaluru, we will definitely win all the three seats in Bengaluru and win maximum seats in the rest of Karnataka,” said a senior leader, adding, “compared to the poll percentage in 2009, this time around the figure has increased by eight to nine per cent because of Narendra Modi’s charisma. Moreover, in all Assembly segments good percentage of polling has been recorded.?”

However, the figures had dipped to 52 per cent in Bangalore (South), Bangalore (Central) and Bangalore North Lok Sabha constituencies, causing concern among top rung leaders of BJP.

Speaking to this newspaper, former chief minister and Bangalore (North) Lok Sabha candidate D.V.Sadananda Gowda said: “In Bengaluru, poll percentage has not gone up to our expectation.”

He, however, put up a brave face saying poor turnout does not harm the prospects of the party. “BJP voters, specially young voters, have turned up at polling booths, and large number of educated and new voters in the city have cast their votes in favour of BJP.”

Mr Gowda maintained that committed voters of BJP and supporters of Mr Modi have voted for the party. “There is no crunch in our vote bank,” he added.
