Third glass break at Chennai Airport

Principal architect blames authorities for lack of supervision
Chennai: Glass panels at the new terminal at Chennai airport continue to break, raising questions about workmanship and supervision by the AAI. On Wednesday, another glass panel in the departure area of the domestic terminal came crashing down, taking the total number of such incidents to three in the last 10 days.
While the latest glass break was attributed to a deliberate preventive measure taken by the airport authorities that led to a few cracks on a glass panel, overall, 17 such mishaps, including false roof crashes, water seepages and glass cracks have taken place at the airport, which was refurbished recently at a cost of Rs 2,015 crore.
Wednesday’s incident happened at 6.35 am when a few workers of a private airline were walking out of the terminal.
“I saw the glass pieces fall from a height of 35 feet,” said an eyewitness. The ministry of civil aviation’s joint secretary Alok Sinha, who holds additional charge as chairman of AAI, said,
“There is something wrong with the construction. We have to find out and take corrective action.” Prof Charanjit S. Shah, principal architect of Creative Group, who designed the airport, said the mishaps were due to a lack of supervision on the execution of the design.
