Hyderabad: Outside the cool canopy of a mall at Banjara Hills, Road No. 2, three friends debated on the need to create awareness among voters.
Santosh Vyas, assistant manager with a business group, felt, “The AAP model of creating awareness on the present issues in the country is worthy of appreciation. Their active interaction via social media and various forums has generated confidence in people that the power of people is a force to reckon with. It is the talking point everywhere. One cannot undermine that.”
While generating interest is important, Rufus Augustine argues that it is not the right way of creating awareness.
He says, “The importance of a voter is not known. It is important to make him aware that his vote is very important and can make a difference.” Mr Augustine notes that by campaigning more people can be persuaded to cast vote and only then there be a change in leadership.
Web designer Sridhar K. said, “The power of technology can be best used to make people aware of their voting rights. Now most people have mobile phones and through them basic facts can be disseminated easily. Once the system of voting is improved we can hope to have a good set of leaders. The present model of AAP has definitely given ideas to many.”
The trio has little hope of seeing a positive change these ensuing general elections, as they feel the very voting mechanism is flawed.
