Sunanda Pushkar death case: LDF, BJP unmoved by statements of kin

Case has to be registered against the husband in case of the wife’s mysterious death, says Kurian

Thiruvananthapuram: Leaders of both the LDF and the BJP are not satisfied with the statement of the family of Sunanda Pushkar that they did not suspect suicide or foul play in her death. Both the parties said the statement left many questions unanswered.

CPM state committee member, M. Vijayakumar said that the move of Mr Shashi Tharoor, UDF candidate in Thiruvananthapuram, to brush aside the allegations relating to the mysterious death of his wife was ridiculous. Mr Tharoor had said that the allegations were part of a malicious campaign.

Mr Vijayakumar said that if the wife died under suspicious circumstances, a case has to be registered against the husband. Even if the relatives of the wife said that they do not have any complaint, a case has to be registered. The demand of the LDF was that the law should take its own course as the forensic report has pointed out that there was a mystery in her death, he said.

BJP national executive member George Kurian said that as per the Indian penal code, a case has to be registered against the husband in case of the wife’s mysterious death within seven years of their marriage.

The Shariat law has provision to pardon the accused if the relatives of the victim wished so. However, such a provision does not exist in the Indian law. Hence, the police have to register a case against Mr Tharoor even if the victim's relatives did not have a complaint, Mr Kurian said.
