Seemandhra: An artisan from Seemandhra region has crafted a bronze statue of ‘Telangana Goddess’ resembling Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi for installation in a temple to be constructed in Telangana.

The renowned sculptor, BVS Prasad, was entrusted with the work of making the statue of the ‘Goddess of Telangana’ by Congress MLA Shankar Rao.

“Mr Shankar Rao approached me and asked me to make a statue of Mother Telangana replicating Sonia Gandhi’s face, who saved lives of Telangana people by forming a separate state,” said Prasad. “As the statue was to be placed as a deity in a temple, I used Panchaloha – brass, bronze, lead, silver and gold. These five- metal alloys are of sacred significance and used for making idols for temples,” Prasad added.

The statue resembles the “Telangana Talli” (Telangana mother) statue of Telangana Rashtra Samithi. The statue has an ear of maize in one hand, and a platter with grains on the other.

The 8.5-feet tall statue that weighs 840 kgs will be installed in a patch of land near the Bangalore-Hyderabad highway registered in the name of Rao’s daughter Sushmitha.

The place will be called ‘Sonia Gandhi Shanti Vanam’ and the statue will be installed once the model code of conduct is withdrawn.

After the installation of the statue, Sonia Gandhi’s name will be added to the list of prominent personalities like M.G. Ramachandran, Amitabh Bachchan and Khushboo, whose followers have build temples in their honour.

Prasad, a resident of Bommuluru village of Krishna district, received national award for crafting the statue of “Telugu Talli” statue, which has been installed in Yanam. He has also made record number of statues of former chief minister YS Rajashekar Reddy, including one installed in Idupulapaya.

Prasad will soon start crafting a 27-feet statue of Mahatma Gandhi for installation in the premises of the Karnataka Assembly.
