Theatre moulded me

With her abundant talent, Aparna Gopinath has been making people sit up and take notice

She is now reading Devdutt Patnaik’s Myth And Mythology. Aparna Gopinath, the girl who broke the heroine mould with her captivating mix of bohemian beauty, fierce confidence and unique vulnerability, is now establishing herself as an A-list actress of Mollywood with her charming personality and sound screen presence.

“Mollywood is treating me excellently. They have accepted me the way I am since my first film and now I am very happy that they have started considering me as an actress who lingers in their minds long after the credits roll,” says the ravishing Aparna with a smile.

The ‘new Malayali beauty’ is celebrating the success of her films. “It has been quite a happy journey,” says the pretty lady. She is now busy with the shooting of her next, Ashiq Abu’s Gangster and Venu’s Munnariyuppu. “Mamukka, Ashiq and his fantastic crew gave me a great experience. I am lucky to be a part of it,” says Aparna.

The actress gracefully hesitates to say further about her projects as she prefers to give the directors their chance. Like her appearance, Aparna is quite different from the rest of the pretty lasses of the M-town, with her strong theatre background. The actress, who has tasted success in both films and theatre, reveals that filmdom threw her out of her comfort zone by demanding more out of her, especially in vibrant roles.

“Theatre and cinema are completely different from each other. One cannot compare the energy of these two platforms,” she explains with much enthusiasm.

The multifaceted and unconventional Aparna is admired by the theatre aficionados of south India for her enigmatic performances in some great plays showcased by Koothu P Pattarai, an avant garde theatre movement in Chennai. Her notable plays includes Six Characters In Search Of An Author, Woyzeck and Moonshine And Sky Toffee to name a few.

“Theatre prepared me to be a complete actor. However, the camera and arc lights have given me a very different experience. Technically, as an actor, it challenges me,” she says.

A secret admirer of Shabana Azmi, Tabu, Sridevi and Kovai Sarala, the dynamic actress calls herself an open actor. “I am always open to learning and am ready as ever to experiment with new challenges, as long as I am able to contribute to my films. Whether it is comedy or tragedy, I am determined to deliver the best.”

Though the sharp featured and corkscrew curly-haired damsel is busy in front of the camera, she somehow manages to find time to choreograph stage shows for tiny tots, “I love children and dance is my passion. So whenever I get time, I enjoy being with the little champs. Recently, I choreographed a couple of stage shows for them. It’s amazing to put them together and create something magnificent,” says Aparna.

The smiling eyes promise that she will wow the audience with her performances in upcoming films too.
