Lok Sabha polls: Congress to go it alone in Telangana state

Chances of an alliance between Congress and TRS in Telangana for 2014 Lok Sabha elections are bleak

Hyderabad: The chances of an alliance between the Congress and the Telangana Rashtra Samiti in Telangana for the upcoming elections are fast dwindling.

Stating that the Congress would contest in all 119 Assembly and 17 Lok Sabha constituencies in Telangana, AICC general secretary and state party affairs incharge Digvijay Singh said on Friday that TRS chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao had not kept his promise to AICC president Sonia Gandhi about merging his party with the Congress. He reminded that Mr Chandrasekhar Rao had told the Congress that 'there would be no further need for the TRS once it achieved its goal of a separate state'.

Mr Singh said that after the Bill was passed, Mr Chandrasekhar Rao ruled out a merger and had instead announced a committee led by K. Kesava Rao to look into the issue of an alliance with the Congress. Mr Kesav Rao was expected to come to Delhi but he did not come, added Mr Digvijay Singh.

When asked that since the Telangana Congress leaders were against an alliance with the TRS, why was the party high command interested, Mr Singh said, “The Congress is going to contest in all 119 Assembly and 17 Lok Sabha seats in Telangana. In Seemandhra too the party will contest in all 175 Assembly and 25 Lok Sabha seats.”
