Chennai: Setting up cyber crime cells in all district crime branches seems to have pushed up the registration of cyber crime in Tamil Nadu, according to the latest statistics available.
The entire state recorded 138 cases of cyber crimes in 2013. Till last year, there were only two wings in the state to monitor cyber crimes - the Chennai cyber crime wing and a cyber cell with the CB-CID.
After setting up the cyber cell units in all districts, trained by CB-CID cyber cops in Chennai, the police administration has managed to reach out to people and get more complaints registered with the new units.
While the Chennai city police cyber crime cell alone recorded 36 cases, other districts recorded a total of 57 cases. “The new units attached to the district CCB have helped people to approach the local police to register a case. Otherwise, they had to come all the way to Chennai to lodge a complaint with the CB-CID. Now, people get a chance to report the crime; so, naturally, the number goes up.
We don’t have any figure of cyber crime cases in 2012, because there were no cyber crime units in the districts other than Chennai,” a senior police official said. The CB-CID has started bringing out an e-bulletin on cyber crime trends from January this year.
