UPA story: Lame duck to dead duck, says Jaitley

BJP's Arun Jaitley questions leadership qualities of Rahul Gandhi, says Congress 'lost the will'.

New Delhi: BJP on Monday questioned the leadership qualities of Rahul Gandhi, wondering if the 'demoralisation' in ruling Congress has something to do with the potential of that generation of the dynasty which 'controls' the party.

"The problem of dynastic parties is that their strength is co-existent and co-terminus with the potential of that generation of the dynasty which controls the party. A Nehru or Indira Gandhi could carry the party on the strength of their personality," Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley said in an apparent reference to the Congress Vice-President.

Though he had written that Congress had 'lost the will' and the UPA government had become a dead duck, political experience dictated that the party will at least make an effort to fight back, he said.

"If the contemporary generation does not have that potential, the party collapses because of inadequate charisma of that generation of the dynasty... A dynastic party will sink or swim with the dynasty," he added.

He said he was surprised at the 'complete collapse' of Congress to fight back in adversity, asking if anyone remembers a single decision the UPA government has taken in the past few months.

"A structured party with a galaxy of leadership and a defined ideology still survives even in adversity, he said. Except for routine functioning of the government such as meetings, file clearance or approval of routine items at the weekly meetings of the Cabinet, "paralysis has completely engulfed the government", he wrote in an article on his website.

Jaitley took swipes at some Congress ministers, though he did not name them, saying their 'arrogant' responses and 'exaggerated' tweets have 'disappeared'.

"Why is it that the Congressmen find themselves so demoralized today? Is it because of arrogant behaviour, scams and misuse of institutions like CBI? They are scared that without power, their accountability may increase. A lot of ministers are now planning life after May 2014," he wrote.
