Cops tighten rules for tenants in Mysore

Move to check crime rate in city.

Mysore: Renting a house in Mysore may no longer be easy as the city police has launched a programme, Suraksha, asking landlords to submit all information about their prospective tenants and those already renting their homes in a prescribed form to the nearby police stations.

Once it has the information it needs, the police will run a background check on the tenants or would be tenants to make sure they have no criminal backgrounds and give its clearance to the landlords.

The idea is to check the growing crime rate in Mysore which is seeing people from different parts of the state and country descending on it in search of jobs or to establish businesses.

The police, which is concerned at the rising robberies, extortions and kidnappings being reported in the city, blames at least 50 per cent of them on outsiders, who it believes could have taken refuge in Mysore after escaping the arm of the law from other parts of the country.

While to begin with landlords will be expected to voluntarily provide the information on their tenants, the scheme will be made mandatory in a phased manner, according to Mysore city police commissioner, Saleem.

“We expect the house owners to furnish their names, occupation, address, contact details and also the photographs of the tenants, their names, details of their families, occupation, mobile number, their previous address and nearest police station.

A proof of identity which could be an aadhar card , driving license or passport will also be required,” he says, explaining that the programme is intended to help control crime and terrorism.
“All the information furnished will be kept confidential,” he assures.
