14 years old’s organs grant life to three

He had spent just 14 years on earth, but has departed as the youngest in the state to his vital organs donated.

Kochi: He had spent just 14 years on earth, but has departed as the youngest in the state to his vital organs donated, that too to give the blessing of life to people who had already spent much more years on earth than him.

At a time when the message of organ donation is fast spreading, P U Vivek Krishnan, son of Unnikrishnan Nair of Panikkassery House at Thykkattusery in Cherthala, who suffered brain death after a freak accident, gave life to 55 year-old Thrissur native, 42-year-old Kottarakkara native and 22-year-old BTech student. His eyes have now been kept at the eye bank at the Little Flower Hospital, Angamaly.

The Thrissur native who was undergoing treatment at Lakeshore Hospital received the liver while the others received one kidney each. Vivek was a student of Muhamma KE Carmel School.

He had entered the pond in his house compund to have a bath on Sunday afternoon, but got drowned by getting entagled in the mud. His father Unnikrishnan noticed his absence quite late.
Vivek was put on shock treatment but was declared brain dead on Friday.

The expert team led by emergency care specialist of Lakeshore Hospital Dr Mohan Mathew brought him to Lakeshore Hospital and made his body capable of organ donation by giving special treatment for 12 hours.

Father Unnikrishnan took the very difficult decision of donating his son’s organs but had no hesitation in doing so. Lakeshore Hospital multi-organ transplant director Dr Philip G Thomas supervised the operations.
