Storm brews over new chief of Twitter India

BJP supporters call move anti-Modi; launch online petitions for Khursheed's removal.

New Delhi: With Twitter appointing former journalist Raheel Khursheed as the head of news, politics and governance of Twitter India, there has been huge backlash from BJP supporters and right-wing users, calling it anti-Narendra Modi.

Many other, however, assert that Khursheed is being attacked for being a “Kashmiri Muslim”. Many Twitter users have also launched online petitions calling for Khursheed's removal.
In his new role Khursheed, a well-known online activist, will be responsible for tracking and expanding Twitter’s relationship with journalists, editors and politicians, and will also increase their active usage of the micro-blogging site.
The movers of the online petitions allege that the former journalist has been severely critical of alleged human rights violations committed by the Army in Kashmir as well as of Modi’s role in the 2002 violence in Gujarat.
Some right-wing activists have taken to change.org which bills itself as the world’s largest petition platform. In the petition, addressed to “CEO, Chairman, Member of the Board, Twitter Inc (NASDAQ: TWTR)”, the petitioners have sought the revocation of the decision to appoint Khursheed.
