SMS drive to oppose Telangana

Seemandhra lawyers to take up SMS campaign for united AP state.

Rajahmundry: With speculation rife that some elected representatives from Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions might favour formation of a separate Telangana state when the AP Re-organisation Bill-2013 comes up for debate during the ensuing Assembly session, Seemandhra lawyers have taken up SMS campaign asking them to oppose the bill and save the state to remain united apart from sending New Year greetings.

Seemandhra lawyers have obtained nearly 290 mobile numbers of MLAs and MLCs from all political parties and sent SMSes urging them to respect the sentiments of the Telugu people.

They are also planning to send e-mails to all the MLAs and MLCs from the region explaining about several constitutional deviations and other lacunae found in the draft bill on Telangana on Wednesday.

A 13-page letter comprising details about the circumstances leading to bifurcation of states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and others and the procedure adopted to do so.

The letter also contains information pertaining to how the draft bill failed to provide information on several key issues during bifurcation of the state and other deviations from the constitutional provisions and lacunae.

The lawyers maintain that the letter which they are going to send to the public representatives becomes handy to make a firm argument on several issues when the Assembly takes up debate on the bill.

The lawyers earlier sent an 18 page e-mail to the President, Prime Minister and heads of national parties and MPs on terms of reference given to the Group of Ministers meant for formation of a separate Telangana state constituted by the Centre.

Now the present exercise deals with several constitutional violations in the draft bill on T.

Nearly 35,000 lawyers from Seemandhra region have been abstaining from court work for the last 154 days and organising a series of demonstrations with the sole agenda to keep the state united.

Seemandhra lawyers JAC co-convenor Muppala Subba Rao said, “We appeal to all the MLAs and MLCs from Seemandhra region to raise beyond party lines and oppose the T Bill by making it clear that it is unscientific and flouting several constitutional norms.”
