Although the Samaikyandhra agitation brought all the development activities to a standstill for two months (August and September), the construction work of the college was not affected.

The state government had earmarked Rs 310 crores for the college and putting all its effort to start the college from the ensuing academic year (2014).

Finance minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy has been closely monitoring the works of the college and the building will be ready to start first year courses by April next year going by the progress of work.

The important events related to the district during 2013 include successful launch of Mars Orbiter from Satish Dhawan Space Centre located at Sriharikota in the district on November 5.

Two more missions, PSLV-C20 launched on February 25 and PSLV-C22 on July 1 from Shar were also successful.

Although the industrial development was at snail pace in 2013, the inclusion of Nellore district in Chennai – Bengaluru industrial corridor revived the hopes over rapid development in industrial sector in the district.

Succumbing to the long-standing demand of the people, the government has opened two new revenue divisions at Nayudupeta and Atmakur during 2013. On agriculture front, the district narrowly escaped from the impact of two cyclones – Helen and Phylin.

However, the northeast monsoon left the farmers high and dry as there was hardly any rainfall unlike never before.

The farming sector is totally dependent on water supply from Somasila and Kandaleru dams now in view of scanty rainfall during northeast monsoon.
