National highway traffic hit by railway over-bridge works in Kollam

Railway Over Bridge at the Cantonment junction reduces traffic into a single lane for several weeks.

Kollam: Bottleneck caused by heavy traffic jam at the busy traffic junction on the Kollam stretch of the National Highway is a common sight these days.

The under-construction Railway Over Bridge (ROB) at the Cantonment junction in the city has reduced traffic into a single lane for the past several weeks.

The spot has turned into a death trap for commuters with four accidents having occurred in a short span.

The traffic on the road to Kollam has been shifted to the other side of the road leading to havoc at the junction with traffic from both directions being forced to use a single side of the road.

Despite land acquisition for constructing the approach road on the stadium side of the road having been completed, nothing has progressed.

"The work is progressing at full swing and work on the approach road is expected to begin soon and will be completed within ten days. This is a temporary inconvenience," said D.N. Rajeev, PWD executive engineer.

The spot near S N College causes great inconvenience to the students who need to cross this area.

"Walking through this area is dangerous. The approach road should have been constructed first, even before joining the bridge to the road making it safe for commuters," said students from S N College.

Construction of a traffic island at the junction of the National Highway and an over-bridge are also under consideration, ensuring safer traffic.

Almost 71 cents of land has been acquired for the construction of a road connecting the over-bridge and the four lane road connecting Kollam Port at the Kochuplamoodu junction.
