Assault case on Kanwaljit Singh

Hyderabad: N. Virender Yadav, the brother of Hyderabad Cricket Association vice-president N. Shivlal Yadav, on Thursday lodged a police complaint against former Hyderabad cricketer and current director of the Hyderabad Cricket Academy of Excellence, Kanwaljit Singh.

Virender was involved in an altercation with Kanwal following which the former approached the Begumpet Police Station to file the complaint. The police has registered a case under IPC sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 341 (wrongful restraint) against Kanwal.

According to the police, the incident occured after Virender’s son, Anirudh, was detained by Kanwal when he had gone to the Gymkhana Sports Complex for his daily tennis and cricket practice.
On Thursday morning, Kanwal stopped Anirudh before he could begin his warm-up session at the cricket ground, saying that there was tournament scheduled there and then, allegedly proceeded to confine him.

According to B. Srihari, Inspector of Police, Virender went up to Kanwal to demand an explanation. One thing led to another and both men were involved in a ruckus. Kanwal grabbed Virender by his collar, causing minor injuries, added the inspector.

It should be interesting to note that Virender’s brother Shivlal and Kanwal belong to rival factions within the HCA. Shivlal’s faction is in the minority, with only four seats on the Executive Committee whereas Kanwal was appointed to his post by the ruling faction, led by M.V. Sridhar. Kanwal represented Hyderabad in Ranji Trophy from 1980-2001 and also played for India ‘A’.
