Economist’s land sold illegally by caretaker

Eminent economist and former Finance Commission chairman Dr A.M. Khusro’s grandson Ali Hussain.

Hyderabad: Eminent economist and former Finance Commission chairman Dr A.M. Khusro’s grandson Ali Hussain has alleged that property worth crores of rupees owned by his late grandfather has been misappropriated and illegally sold by the man who was entrusted with its guardianship.

Furthermore, Hussain alleged that the police failed to act against the perpetrators until he sought the help of a Union minister. Even after that, Dr Khusro’s family continues to get threatening calls asking them not to pursue the case any further.

According to Hussain, the late Dr Khusro inherited several hundreds of acres of land in Moosapet and Ibrahimpatnam. As his sons lived in the United States and his own work was based in the national capital, Dr Khusro had appointed a trusted lieutenant Salam Bawazir to manage the property. It is Bawazir who Hussain accuses of selling off pieces of the land to third parties without the knowledge of Dr Khusro’s family after Dr Khusro passed away in 2003.

Hussain lodged complaints with the Kukatpally and Banjara Hills police stations a couple of months ago after the illegal sales came to light. “We started receiving income tax notices for sale deeds we hadn’t executed and then we discovered how he had tried to swindle the property," Hussain said.

Legal opinion sought by the Kukatpally police also nailed Salam Bawazir. Cops consulted a public prosecutor for standard procedures who said, “It is clear that Salam Bawazir committed an offence and indulged in cheating at the execution of sale deeds with an intention to cause loss to the Principals.

Hussain said that though FIRs were issued months ago, the matter didn’t move forward until he approached a Union minister. Salam Bawazir was finally arrested on Tuesday. Inspector Chandrakanth of Kukatpally police station said, “The case is still under investigation. If they are making threatening calls to him, he can lodge another complaint.”
