Chavittunatakam reborn, thanks to Biennale

Chinnathampi Annavi's statue to be unveiled Dec. 30.

Kochi: After the successful first edition of Kochi – Muziris Biennale, a cultural resurgence is happening in and around the coastal areas in Ernakulam district. In villages like Gothuruth, traditional art forms like Chavittunatakam are attaining more significance now than any time in history.

The sculpture of Chavittunatakam exponent, Chinnathampi Annavi, will be unveiled at Gothuruth on December 30 during the five-day Chavittunatakam festival. Union Minister Prof. K.V Thomas will unveil the sculpture.

The 11-foot statue, which possesses great historical significance, is being made as part of the biennale. Sculptor Anto George hadn’t any photographs or pictures of Chinnathampi Annavi as he is a mythical character.

“Before finalising the concept and structure, I talked to experts who have done researches on Chavittunatakam. Since there is no reference in history about the personality or appearance of the character, the sculpture is wholly based on the myths and stories told by villagers,” said Anto George.

Though the project was initiated by the Biennale Foundation, its work was delayed due to shortage of funds. Later, Prof. K.V Thomas provided funds for it.

Studies show that Chinnathampi Annavi, a preacher of Christianity who lived in the Kochi- Kodungalloor areas in the 16th century, was instrumental in introducing the art form of Chavittunatakam.

“Chinnathampi Annavi was the pioneering exponent of this artistic form in the coastal areas from Kodungalloor to Kollam. The Biennale Foundation has decided to make a memorial for him considering the historical significance of Chavittunatakam,” said Boney Thomas, trustee of the foundation.
