Private colleges not for Article 371-D

The proposal to implement Article 371-D after bifurcation of the state has sparked off a row.

Hyderabad: The proposal to implement Article 371-D after bifurcation of the state has sparked off a row, with the managements of private professional colleges deciding to move the Andhra Pradesh High Court against such a move.

Article 371-D provides reservations for locals in education and employment. It also offers equitable opportunities for people of all regions in the state in education and employment.

However, the managements of private professional colleges argue that Article 371-D applies only to education and employment in the government sector and that the private sector does not come under its purview.

They pointed out that successive state governments have been implementing Article 371 (D) in private professional engineering colleges. The managements do not want this Constitutional provision to continue when two new states are formed after bifurcation.

They plan to file a petition in the Andhra Pradesh High Court next week. “If Article 371 (D) is applicable to the private education sector, it is applicable to private jobs sector too. The government has been acting in violation of the constitutional norms. Adopting the same policy even after the bifurcation of the state is not acceptable to us,” said Ramesh Nimmatoori, Chairman, Consortium of Engineering and Professional Colleges Managements Association of Andhra Pradesh.
