Life after ‘Malayalee House’ has been ‘excellent’, says Rosin Jolly. “It has brought me fame and it feels good to be recognised,” she says about the reality show’s impact. Soon after the show, she toured Europe for a month to unwind and returned to sign a film each in Malayalam and Tamil. “These are lead roles with fairly big banners but I don’t want to reveal more now,” she says. The much-deserved break meant losing out on a few offers but several leading directors have been approaching her.
She will also be anchoring a programme called Champions in Surya TV. Interestingly, the channel managers wanted her to host it along with Housemate Rahul Easwar but she rejected the offer. They then apparently roped in Rahul and his wife Deepa but when they backed out, Rosin agreed to be the host.
Why does she want to have no association with Rahul, with whom she was supposed to enjoy a ‘close’ relationship? “Some friendships you consider genuine but when you realise they are not, then they are not worthy of your friendship,” says Rosin, clearly hurt by the way her so-called relationship with Rahul was projected throughout the show. “I am slow at judging friendships and easy to convince but some people made the most of my vulnerability. I have been brought up with certain values and taught to respect seniors and live in harmony. I neither said outrageous things like some did nor bitch about others and the result was that I ended up being called fake.”
She goes on to explain that she had innumerable fights with Rahul when she pleaded with him to ‘stop playing the fool and trying to be overly close’. “Once, he agreed and when I hugged or smiled as I did with everybody else, the show got its footage. At times, we would be discussing something general but the voice over would be misleading. I confronted the show managers about this after I got out but they said their show was what was important for them and that I was probably too naive to be in it. I knew people like Sherin Varghese and G.S. Pradeep were pure strategists but I did not expect that of Rahul.”
Towards the end, she stopped talking to him because ‘it is the girl who always gets blamed’. “What else could I have done in a closed environment?”
Rahul was keen to continue the friendship outside the House too but Rosin was clear that she was not interested in the least and went to the extent of not taking his calls and blocking him on WhatsApp and instructing her parents not to entertain any calls from him. “When I was a participant, I didn’t have much of a choice but to interact with every House member. But outside, I won’t allow anyone to force himself upon me,” says Rosin.
What if he is head over heels in love with her? “If so, that’s wrong and unacceptable because he is married.”
Soon after emerging victorious, Rahul had told Deccan Chronicle that what he had for Rosin ‘was nothing but good friendship’. Asked why they seemed not on talking terms, he termed it as meÂre saundarya pinakkam (miÂnÂor tiff) between friends.
She has even harsher words for Thinkal Bhal, whom she had first met on the flight to Hyderabad whÂÂere the show was conducted. “ThÂrough her crass behaviour and attitude, she created a bad imÂage for all the Malayalee House girls.”
Her mood changes from one of anguish to embarrassment and mirth as you refer to her famous quips, ‘God, why did you shower me with so much beauty?’ and ‘Is it a sin to be beautiful, chechi?’. “That was in response to a viewer’s comment, faulting me for trying to trap men with beauty. But they aired my comments out of context,” says Rosin, who has moved base to Kochi from Bengaluru to pursue a full-fledged career in entertainment.
