Despite prohibitory order cattle comes in from Tamil Nadu

In stark violation of the prohibitory order issued by the district administration in Idukki district.

Kottayam: In stark violation of the prohibitory order issued by the district administration in Idukki district, hundreds of cattle were brought into Kerala from Tamil Nadu, crossing the border in the early hours of the morning.

The prohibition was put in place after foot and mouth disease took a toll of more than 100 cattle altogether in the district in a short span of time.

Sources from Kumaly said that these cattle were brought through the forest paths late in the night, thereby evading checking at the Kumaly check post.

“The cattle were brought walking till the border, through the forest paths, and then they will be transported in lorries to various parts of the district, such as Kattapana, Kumaly, Nedunkandoma and Peerumedu. Since these cattle are bypassing the routine checking, and violating the prohibitory order they might be infected with diseases,” said a source from the Forest Department.

According to sources, the cattle, who are being brought from Theny in Tamil Nadu, will be taken via Puthupetty to Ramakkalmedu in Idukki. Sources said that the disease-infected cattle were being brought in exclusively for the purpose of meat.

“Consumption of infected meat can cause serious diseases. Regardless of any verification of the cattle they are being transported to the markets in these places,” said the source.

Those who are bringing the cattle are getting help from local businessmen in Pampanar, who are providing them the support to move the cattle in vehicles once inside the Kerala border, sources said.
